Cruise Ship Ryndam Spends Night Anchored in Tampa Bay

A Holland America cruise ship, the Ryndam, spent the night anchored in Tampa Bay with 1,250 newly boarded passengers when it encountered engine and electrical problems shortly after sailing.

The ship reported engine problems about an hour after sailing from the Port of Tampa on Dec. 8th, and stalled in the channel between the port and the Skyway Bridge.

Power to the ship was subsequently restored, but the Coast Guard said the ship would remain moored in the area overnight while they investigated the problem with the engines.

Passengers who were asked to stay in their cabins while the power was out were later told they could leave their cabins to get sandwiches if they have not had dinner.

The Coast Guard did not say when they thought the Ryndam, which was just starting a 14-day cruise, would be on its way.
